He was a conquistador and an explorer. He was born in Jerez de los Caballeros in 1500. He travelled to America and joined to an expedition that discover the coast of Nicaragua, and then they conquered the place.
He was also the governor of Cuba before leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of what we know as the United States. He was the European that saw the Mississippi river. He died in 1542 of a tropical fever in a native village. The local natives believed that he was inmortal so his men had to hide his body and bury it in the river during the night.

Él fue también gobernador de Cuba antes de partir a la primera expedición europea al territorio que ahora conocemos como Estados Unidos. Él fue el primer europeo que vio el río Mississippi. Murió en 1542 de una fiebre tropical en un poblado. Sus habitantes nativos creían que Hernando de Soto era inmortal por lo que sus hombres tuvieron que esconder su cuerpo y enterrarlo en el río durante la noche.
